is why 90% of our American friends come to Canada. Moose Horn Lodge is well known for big tasty Walleyes. There are literally thousands of miles of shoreline in the surrounding lakes which will give you endless fishing possibilities.

Walleye fishing starts the third Saturday in May. The limit with a Sport License is 4 with no fish between 16.1 and 22 inches. You are only allowed 1 Walleye greater than 22 inches. With a Conservation License, you are allowed 2 fish with non greater then 16.0 inches. These new limits are for all of Northern Ontario. The fish can be filleted but a strip of skin has to be left on the fillet for identification if you are crossing the border back into the States.

Equipment used should be light or ultra light rods with 6 pound test line. Lures should include 1/8 oz jigs, twister tails and Rapalas. Minnows and worms also work well. We recommend fishing early in the morning and then in the evening on some of our smaller lakes. For more details, view Walleye Fishing Tips.

in the Chapleau area lakes will put a big smile on your face. No fishing trip to Northern Ontario is complete without catching a big Pike. Many fisher-persons go for Walleye in the morning to ensure their lunch and then spend the rest of the afternoon hunting down those big Northern Pike which like to sun themselves in the shallow Wild Rice beds, Bulrushes and Lily Pads. The Moose Horn Lodge lakes are perfect for big Northerns. Northerns hit best in the afternoon.

The limit for Northern Pike with a Sports License is 6 with only 2 greater then 24 inches and only one of these can be over 34 inches. With a Conservation License, you can only keep 2 pike with only 1 greater then 24 inches with no fish over 34 inches.

Pike hit just about any lure. We suggest a medium size rod with 8 to 10 pound test line and black nylon-coated steel leaders. Big minnows work well as you will see if you view Pike Fishing Tips.

in the Chapleau area is excellent. Most guests come to the north for Walleye and Pike and do not take advantage of the great Brook Trout fishing. As a result, there is a healthy population of Brook Trout (Speckled Trout) in the local streams and lakes. In most parts of North America, a two pound Brook Trout is considered a trophy. The residents of the Chapleau area think that's funny.

The limit of Brook Trout is 7 in your possession. Generally, Brook Trout like worms, small spinners or single salmon eggs on a small trout hook. 4 to 6 pound test line should be used with a fly or noodle rod but a Walleye stick will work just fine. At Moose Horn Lodge, we have a good selection of quality boats and motors for rent or as part of your package deal. We have 14 foot and 12 foot aluminum boats with motors ranging from 5 hp to 8 hp. All our boats and motors are well maintained and serviced on a regular basis.

For the ATV enthusiasts we have hundreds of miles of new and old logging roads right outside our door for you to explore. There are also a couple of loops where you would start on one logging road, make a 30 mile loop and come down another logging road right back to your cottage door.

Possession of fish means live or cleaned. Possession means fish on your stringer, fish in your freezer, fish in your frying pan. Some people catch and clean 4 Walleyes and put them in the freezer to take home. Then they go back out and catch lunch. This is illegal. If you plan on eating three Walleyes for lunch every day, then you can only have one Walleye in the freezer and must wait until your last day to keep those extra three Walleyes. Many people have been confused on this issue. Go to Ministry of Natural Resources Fishing Regulations

We ask our guest not to keep Walleyes over 4 pounds. Walleyes over 4 pounds are generally female and only make up 15% of the population. They are needed to keep our Walleye population healthy. The smaller 2 to 4 pound Walleyes are males and taste much better. We want sports fishing not meat fishing at Moose Horn Lodge. If you catch a trophy, please measure, take a picture and then let the fish go. Hawkins Taxidermists have replicas that look better than a real fish and cost less than mounting a real fish. Go To Hawkins Taxidermists' web page.

Moose Horn Lodge sells minnows and worms. If you want fishing tackle, there are several bait stores in the village of Chapleau which is only a 10 minute drive from the lodge. We also have fish cleaning and freezing facilities. Click here to view our Photo Gallery
