ALL HUNTS START ON SUNDAY. WEEKS ARE: Aug. (15 to 23 / 2009) and (22 to 29 / 2009)
Since 1958, we have specialized in the bear hunt & have produced the highest results in the Chapleau area. Our 2008 fall bear hunt success rate was 91% with a 182% sighting rate. Wounds, misses & pass-ups are included in our success rate. Our job is to give you the opportunity to shoot a bear and your job is to dispatch it. . Our success rate is more than three times the provincial average of 30%. This we attribute to our know-how & the cooperation of the hunters. There is very hard work weeks ahead of your arrival in getting tons of bait set out for the hunt & this continues all through the hunt. For hunt #1, our baited area covers more than 430 square miles.
Each hunter is placed on an individual bait, which is constantly checked and replenished. With all our years of experience, we have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge on the ways & habits of game animals. You can be assured that we do our utmost for you to realize a successful hunt. When checking in, we give you the rules and regulations of the camp and we set aside time for you to ask any questions you might have.
We advise a party of more than 3 hunters to bring more than 1 vehicle due to the large hunting area that is covered. Trucks & 4 wheel drive vehicles are recommended & hunters who have ATVs are advised to bring them in case we have to put you down a grown in road.
The hunt has been put together with you, the sportsman, in mind. Because we want to give our customers the best hunt of their lives, we only take about 12-15 hunters per week. We come highly recommended by the North American Hunting Club but most of our guests are repeat hunters, new hunters they bring with them and word of mouth. Because of this fact, I would advise you to get your booking in as soon as possible, specifying which week you would like. Spouses who which to accompany their partners during the hunt will be required to pay an additional $300.00 US
A $500.00 US non-refundable deposit by money order, cashier's check or personal check made out to Moosehorn Lodge is required per hunter with a second deposit of $500.00 will be due by May 15th with the balance being paid upon checking in. This is your assurance for your booking as well as ours. In case of a cancellation, your deposit will be forwarded to the following year's hunt if we can fill your spot. If we cannot find other hunters to take your place, your deposit will be forfeited.
IT IS NOT THE CALIBER OF THE RIFLE OR THE DRAW WEIGHT OF A BOW THAT GUARANTEES A KILL. IT IS THE PLACEMENT OF THE SHOT.
Rifles should be in the 30-caliber class. Anything higher, the hunter tends to place his faith in "Power". Power cannot replace effective bullet placement, especially for bears. Baits vary in range from 15-50 yards, so make sure scopes are sighted in for these distances. They should be in the 3x or less range. Anything higher becomes a disadvantage in our terrain. Make sure you bring along a soft gun case for going into and coming out of your blind. Bows should be around a 50 lb. draw weight. Low end draw weights allow you to wait for that clear & clean placement. Heavier draw weights cause muscle tiring, shaking & bad releases. They become a disadvantage, even with compound bows. After making the draw, a hunter may have to wait for 5 to 10 minutes for an effective release. We prefer that our bow hunters hunt from ground blinds to achieve flatter shooting & effective arrow placement. BOW HUNTERS who like to hunt from tree stands are asked to bring their own stands. They should also bring along a soft case to carry their bows in and out of their bait sites. Hunter orange is in effect. The minimum is 400 square inches above the waist with an orange cap. Hunter orange camouflage and mesh do not qualify. You have to wear this going into and coming out of your bait site but you can remove it while sitting in your blind or tree stand.
The weather at this time of year is usually very nice, but evenings are a bit chilly. Weather could vary, so come prepared with some warm clothing. The things you will need to bring is fly dope, head nets, personal belongings, summer & winter weight clothing, gloves, cooler, compass, hunting knife, lawn chair or hunting chair, camera, flashlight, alarm clock, rain wear, waterproof boots, towels, dish towels, soap, toilet tissue and anything else you think you will need or that you normally bring on hunting trips.
You might want to do some middle of the day fishing, however, we do stress not to get carried away with the fishing & make sure that you get on your baits early. Once you have obtained your bear, you are free to fish all you want. The type of fish in this area are Northern Pike, Walleye, Whitefish and Brook Trout. For those who will want to fish the lakes in the vicinity of their baits, it would be advantageous to equip your vehicle in such a way that you could transport the boat.
